OptionsXpress is an online brokerage which was founded in 2000 by Jim Gray, Ned Bennett and David Kelt after they decided the online options trading community deserved a better experience during their trading sessions. Based in Chicago, Illinois, they are at the very center of the options trading world. The company went public in 2005 and enjoyed massive growth which ultimately lead to their acquisition in 2011 by Charles Schwab Corporation in a billion dollar deal. OptionsXpress are a truly customer oriented broker, something you have probably heard a lot but these guys really backup the claim. Support is available via email, “snail mail”, fax, telephone and live chat on their website during business hours should you have a question regarding options trading as a whole or something more specific regarding their company. If you encounter a problem with your account for whatever reason they have staff on hand pretty much all day monday to saturday, which is a nice touch as most brokers just shut down by 6pm on Friday. However, the most impressive feature of their customer support team is the fact that they offer free broker assisted orders and licensed specialists for futures and options trade via phone or live chat. If you are relatively new to options trading then they have you covered. OptionsXpress have one of the largest and most comprehensive educational resources offered by a broker, something they take great pride in. With OptionsXpress starting out as platform developers rather than a brokerage it should come as no surprise to you that they have one of the most attractive and user friendly platforms within the industry. The user interface is slick, well laid out and extremely customisable. All the standard features you would expect from a broker, allowing you to create some of the most complex orders in just a few clicks. If you happen to place the same kind of order regularly you can create a template for it to save time at a later date – a very handy feature.
Their mobile platform breaks through no boundaries if we are honest but it does get the job done. You have the ability open options orders, research and generally manage your account. You will rarely need more than though, so it’s no great loss. OptionsXpress categorize traders into two groups: Active and Standard. Standard traders will be charged $14.95 for anything up to nine contracts or $1.50 per contract if ordering ten or more, while active traders can expect to pay $12.95 or $1.25 each. To become an active trader and receive your discounted rates all you need to do is make 35 or more traders every 3 months. It’s an interesting billing model but works out about right for the industry standard in most cases. If you are an investor as opposed to a trader then you really should not have to look anywhere else. Their platform is incredibly easy to use while being feature rich, their mobile platform does all that can really be asked of it and their rates are competitive. All of those things alone would make them a competitive brokerage worth taking a test drive but when you add their educational resources, the free broker-assisted trades and access to licensed professionals it puts them head and shoulders above the competition. The broker distinguishes itself from the competition with its variety of unique tools, as well as its ability to continuously innovate and focus on ease of use. This successful formula has made it a popular spot not only for casual options traders but also for other investors, including regular equities and even futures traders. Because of this broker’s success, it was acquired by Charles Schwab (SCHW) in March 2011. In 2013, it was revealed that eventually optionsXpress would be fully integrated into Charles Schwab and its doors would be closed thereafter. Charles Schwab is in a several-year process of porting over optionsXpress’s best features and functionality, while letting the company continue to operate as an independent broker and take care of its clients. As of January 2015, no exact timetable had been set as to when this process would be completed. optionsXpress has its pros and cons as far as commissions go. Getting the negatives out of the way, its options structure is hardly ideal for casual investors. The broker charges $1.50 per contract if there are less than 35 options trades per quarter, with a $14.95 minimum. Otherwise, it is only $1.25 per contract with a $12.95 minimum. This means that even if you only trade a single option, the commission would be at least $12.95. Comparatively speaking, one contract at TD Ameritrade would cost $10.74, ETRADE $10.74, Scottrade $8.25, and OptionsHouse $5.45. The site and tools are what you pay for in this case. Thus, it all depends on your specific needs as an investor. Options aside, equity trades are on a $8.95 flat rate, which is also the rate charged by parent company Charles Schwab.
Furthermore, 182 commission-free ETFs are made available (via commission rebate) thanks to Charles Schwab. optionsXpress also offers mutual funds, bonds, and futures trading. The broker's all-in-one trade ticket is the best available anywhere, the site design is clean, and optionsXpress is the only broker to organize all site tools by experience level and type on one page. In 2014, the broker launched IRIS, a notifications assistant for all accounts. IRIS is an eye icon that rests in the upper right corner of the client’s website. It displays accounts alerts, trade notifications, and tools updates. Clicking the eye icon will take you to the IRIS Notification Center, where customizations can be made and notifications filtered. Lastly, optionsXpress offers what they call "Walk Limit" order types for options. To prevent adjusting limit orders as they sit live, optionsXpress will "walk" your order to try to get the most favorable price within the National Best Bid or Offer (NBBO).
We awarded the “Walk Limit” order type the Best New Tool in our 2013 Review. Today, the order type continues to thrive, as it is now customizable and available in mobile. optionsXpress's flagship platform, Xtend, is offered in both desktop form and as individual tools on the website itself. Overall, the desktop version of Xtend is just okay. While it was very visually appealing, we found it to be sluggish speed-wise, and the charting was difficult to use, not to mention much weaker than charting available elsewhere. Another aspect of the Xtend desktop platform we did not particularly care for was the layout, which forces preset sizes and limited numbers of windows. Tools can be popped out of the platform area, but in the end, it is a poor user experience. If there is one positive highlight, it is the trade ticket functionality, which we found to be a similar experience to the website. Speaking of the website, the tools and functionality here were much smoother. By clicking the "Toolbox" link within the website’s main header, clients are taken to a page that lists all available tools, their skill level, and type. Some tools, such as the Chart Patterns tool, are basic iterations of licensed third-party services, while others, such as Idea Hub, are more innovative and interesting. Idea Hub is a scanning tool that quickly breaks down potential trade ideas based on current market activity. All trade ideas can then be assessed with profit and loss charts alongside probability charts, then moved to a prefilled trade ticket for order entry.
The tool can also be found in all mobile apps. We also enjoyed the options analysis tools available. The Trade and Probability calculator whips up profit and loss charts alongside probability charts for any trades being considered. Similar to Idea Hub, the method Scanner is another useful options tool that generates trade ideas based on market outlook, risk, and symbol. Although Charles Schwab owns and operates optionsXpress, the two brokers remain independent. As a Charles Schwab client, you can log in and then utilize the optionsXpress website however, as an optionsXpress client, you cannot access the Charles Schwab website without a Schwab account. As far as customer service is concerned, clients do not need to worry. After numerous support tests across phone, email, and live chat, we found optionsXpress above the industry average for overall quality. Mobile trading with optionsXpress is also a pleasant experience. The broker has apps for iPhone, Android, and iPad, as well as a mobile website. Besides ease of placing orders, charting was a big standout for us, as the broker supports 45 technical indicatorsstudies. OptionsXpress is an online discount broker that focuses on providing top of line option trading tools and commission rates and, as of recently, is a part of the Charles Schwab Corporation after being acquired in 2011. OptionsXpress offers their flagship trading platform called Xtend that features streaming quotes and market data, time and sales, scanners, advance orders and charting and is currently free to non-professional users. The platform overall is good but not great. I found it to be slower than other platforms and the charting was difficult to use and seemed to lag. OptionsXpress offers some unique tools that turned out to be pretty useful. The Trading Patterns tool features a table that shows which options are trading the most volume giving you insight into where the volume is in the market and what direction traders are betting on it to go. The other really useful tool is called Idea Hub. With this tool you can scan for actionable trade ideas that quickly assess the trade with probability charts and order ticket that is pre-filled and ready to go putting you in an a position to act quickly should you decide to take the trade. A really nice feature that OptionsXpress offers that many other brokers don’t is a Virtual Trading platform. Within the platform you will get real time quotes and streaming charts with $25,000 in virtual buying power. This is a great way to practice executing orders and fine tuning your strategies without any risk to real capital. In the platform you can trade stocks, options and futures and you will have the ability to utilize advanced order entries. If you’re new to trading, starting in a virtual account is a great way to learn and practice. I know it won’t be the same as putting real money on the line but it’s still a good way to practice and could help you eliminate mistakes when trading real money. I still go back to using a virtual account every once in a while to try out new strategies or if I’ve been in a little bit of a trading slump. Commission Rates & Fees. OptionsXpress has fairly competitive commission rates with the option to have an active trading rate or their standard flat rate.
So if you trade a lot you can gain access to their cheaper commission rates that start at just $1.50 per contract if you trade more than 10 contracts. If you trade less than 10 contracts then its a flat rate of $14.95. If you’re an active trader the commission rate is $12.95 for one to ten contracts and anything over ten contracts its $1.25 per contract. So, as you can see, these rates cater more towards the active trader and could really make an impact on your bottom line if you’re not trading a lot. Now this is a competitive rate but its definitely not the cheapest option commission rate out there. If you’re an active trader and you trade 10 contracts with OptionsXpress it will cost you a flat rate of $12.95 and if you did that same trade with Ameritrade it’s $17.49, TradeKing its $11.45, TradeStation its $12.99 and at OptionsHouse its only $9.95. So at $12.95 you’re paying on average a higher rate, which doesn’t sound like a lot now, but it will add up over time. For stocks they do not offer an active trader discount and all trades are charged a flat rate of $8.95 or $17.90 per round turn while Futures have a flat rate of $3.50 per contract. Like I said before, this isn’t the cheapest commissions on the street so if your main concern is commissions only then this broker may not be best for you. OptionXpress has some promising tools and decent commission rates so if they could get their platform upgraded they would be a solid option to call home. As it stands now, I would only recommend it to casual investors who doesn’t need a super powerful platform. The active trader will need a more powerful platform that will have direct market access and preferably access to hotkey functions like what LightSpeed or TradeStation has to offer. I am requesting that you do a manual review of the organic results on "chinook boot dryers" I am requesting that you do a manual review of the organic results on "chinook boot dryers", and many other "boot dryer" and "boot dryers" keywords. First there is not much variety being displayed, since the search results are almost ALL going to websites controlled by the same guy who has built the following websites, and interlinked them together and crowded out all of the other possible search results: + his pages on Amazon (note the seller is SEA Products, which is the same guy who runs all of the above websites. Scott E Allen.) You can verify this by looking at the phone numbers and addresses on the above websites, plus all of the sites look like each other. This seems very spammy and NOT a good representation of Yahoo's stellar results. Also, it sends the signal to others that all you need to do is build out 5-6 ****** websites, link them together and take over the top search results. which isn't fair to other operators or customers trying to find the best products. Another interesting thing about the results for "chinook boot dryers" is the fact that this guy has the domain chinookbootdryer. com, and that he is NOT the manufacturer of Chinook Boot Dryers but his organic listing is being treated with domain authority as though he was the manufacturer. We spoke to the actual manufacturer and found out that this guy is only one of many of their dealers and does not work for the company or have any affiliation with them in any way. You can verify this by calling the manufacturer yourself. Their number is 203-366-3840. We have researched many other "boot dryer" keyword results and have noted that his websites are ALL dominant and taking up almost all of the page 1 organic search results.
